Covid safe: Australian government launches coronavirus tracing app

Image
The Australian government has launched Covidsafe, an app that traces every person running the app who has been in contact with someone else using the app who has tested positive for coronavirus in the previous few weeks, in a bid to automate coronavirus contact tracing, and allow the easing of restrictions. The national cabinet said that the app could be a valuable tool “if the numbers increase and the application is widely taken up”. Health minister Greg Hunt said the government’s target for uptake of the app is 40% of the population. Morrison said automatic contact tracing would be a key component in states and territories easing some restrictions on “high-value, low-risk economic activities” after the next four weeks. He compared using the app to buying bonds during the war. “ In the war, people bought war bonds to get in behind the national effort. What we’re doing in fighting this fight is we’ll be asking people to download an app which helps us trace the virus quickly ...

Microsoft Teams has reached 32 million users as remote work surges

Image
Microsoft Corp said on Thursday that Teams, its chat and conferencing app, reached 32 million users as of March 11 amid a surge in remote work by companies around the world in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The number was up sharply from November, when Microsoft said it had 20 million daily active users. Teams competes directly with collaboration app maker Slack Technologies Inc, which said in October that it had 12 million daily active users. Slack did not update that figure during its earnings announcement on March 12, but said four of its five largest deals in the most recent quarter were won against Microsoft Teams . Microsoft also rolled out several features designed to help with telemedicine and working from home, such as bookings application for Teams to help hospitals manage virtual appointments. “ As organizations around the world are changing the way they work in response to the [coronavirus] situation, we’re going to learn a tremendous amount,” Satya ...

Schools Ditch Zoom Amid Concerns Over Online Learning Security

Image
With so many schools closed, the Zoom video meeting app has become wildly popular among educators, but it’s now under scrutiny for security and privacy issues. School leaders in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas have announced they’re discontinuing their use of the Zoom videoconferencing service for distance learning because of security, privacy, harassment and other concerns. And individual schools in Los Angeles and elsewhere are also switching to alternatives, like Microsoft Teams , Google Hangouts and WebEx. As NPR reported last week, the FBI issued a warning about incidents of school Zoom meetings being disrupted. There have been reports of racist and pornographic imagery being shown to young children. Some intrusions may originate with students pranking their classmates, but Gizmodo reported there are also organized “Zoombombing” campaigns online. Zoom has soared in popularity as people around the world shelter in place to protect from the spreading coro...

We Have Entered Recession That Will Be Worse Than 2009

Image
It is clear that we have entered a recession” that will be worse than in 2009 following the global financial crisis, says IMF Chief. The coronavirus pandemic has driven the global economy into a downturn that will require massive funding to help developing nations. With the worldwide economic “sudden stop,” Georgieva said the fund’s estimate “for the overall financial needs of emerging markets is $2.5 trillion.” Governments in emerging markets, which have suffered an exodus of capital of more than $83 billion in recent weeks, can cover much of that, but “clearly the domestic resources are insufficient” and many already have high debt loads. Over 80 countries, mostly of low incomes, have already have requested emergency aid from the International Monetary Fund. The fund is aiming to beef up its response “to do more, do it better, do it faster than ever before.” The IMF Chief officially requested a increase in the fund’s fast-deploying emergency facilities from their ...

Eligible individuals will be able to apply online through myGov to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation before 1 July 2020. They will also be able to access up to a further $10,000 from 1 July 2020 for approximately three months (exact timing will depend on the passage of the relevant legislation). Australia blocks arrival of all non-citizens, non-residents in expanded coronavirus travel ban

Image
All foreigner travelers will be banned from entering Australia from Friday. Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the enhanced border measures in response to the coronavirus outbreak. It applies to all non-citizens and non-residents. Australians will still be able to return from overseas but they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. The Government had previously banned foreign nationals from coming to Australia  from China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. New Zealand had already announced plans to close its borders to foreign nationals Mr Morrison said he had consulted New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern about Australia’s new travel ban prior to announcing it. “The New Zealand arrangement, in the same way as it has in the past, doesn’t apply to Australians living in New Zealand as New Zealand residents,” he said. “Equally for New Zealanders living in Australia as Australian residents, these are the same rules that apply in both countries. “We h...

Do You Know That Cybercriminals Are Now Exploiting The Coronavirus Scare To Infect Global Targets?

Image
Today’s cyber threats ride on real virus threats. Emotet, a malware gang notorious for taking advantage of trending current events is exploiting the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic by scaring potential victims into opening malicious attachments, camouflaged as official notifications from public health centers and disability welfare service providers. This tactic has already been observed in Japan, where the gang is actively distributing malware payloads via emails that warn targets of coronavirus infection reports in various cities. Using stolen emails from previously compromised accounts as templates, this campaign leverages footers containing the addresses of legitimate institutions for added authenticity, capitalizing on the coronavirus’s wide impact and the fear of infection surrounding it. The potential ramifications of receiving malware through such malicious emails are grave: as seen in 2017’s WannaCry attack, ransomware cost the UK’s National Health Service £20 mil...

Corona virus concerns prompt cancellation of Facebook F8 developer conference

Image
The cancellation of Facebook’s biggest event of the year, which was set for May, follows in the footsteps of Mobile World Congress. Facebook said Thursday it's canceling its F8 developer conference, the social media giant’s biggest event of the year, over concerns about the novel coronavirus. The unusual move illustrates how the outbreak of COVID-19, the respiratory illness the virus causes, is impacting the world’s largest tech companies. Facebook’s mostly-annual conference was scheduled to take place at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center on May 5 and 6. It is a widely anticipated Facebook event, and last year attracted more than 5,000 developers , creators, and entrepreneurs from around the globe. “This was a tough call to make — F8 is an incredibly important event for Facebook and it’s one of our favorite ways to celebrate all of you from around the world — but we need to prioritize the health and safety of our developer partners, employees and everyone who help...
